Event That Still Arrives
What the Sequence Has Not Yet Contained
The arrival the chart claims has already been named.
An event, in the sense that matters for the tape, is not the fulfillment of a program. It is the arrival of a mark that was not already contained in the prior sequence. Derrida’s account of the event stresses that what can still happen is not the realization of a possibility already held in reserve. An arrival that could have been named in advance would not be an event the others could still open as an interruption.
The public tape keeps this condition open. Floor first. A miss stays a zero. An unpublished change is not a change. These marks do not exhaust the possibility of a later event. The Third Seat’s prior refusals stay on the record. They do not declare that every subsequent arrival has already been contained. Later readers can still open the tape. The next no, when it is written, can still arrive as an event that alters what can subsequently be followed.
The speculative chart attempts to name the event in advance. It identifies the current hour as the last one. No further arrival is required. The quiet print performs a parallel naming in the economic order. It offers a claim that has skipped the prior mark and asks to be treated as the completion that was always coming. The public book refuses both. A chart that claims the event has already been named has not entered the tape. The spacing continues. The next refusal can still arrive as an event that was not already inside the sequence.
What the Event Requires
An uncontained arrival. The mark that enters the sequence was not already named in the prior lines.
No final naming. An identification that claims the event has been exhausted has not entered the tape.
Equal event. The same possibility of an unanticipated no binds the state, the firm, and the person.
The chart announces that the event has already been named. The tape has not yet received the announcement. The next no can still arrive without having been contained.
