Remainder of the Book
What Cannot Be Exhausted by the Chart
The unfinished middle that the speculative identification does not close.
A remainder, in Derrida’s account, is what exceeds any attempt at full accounting. It is not a leftover that a more complete calculation could finally absorb. It is the condition under which any mark appears. The trace, the spacing, the iterability of the signature—all of these name a remainder that cannot be reduced to presence or to a final identification.
The public tape maintains such a remainder. Floor first. A miss stays a zero. An unpublished change is not a change. These are not temporary gaps waiting for a chart that will close them. They are the conditions under which any later mark can still be written and refused. The speculative identification attempts to exhaust the remainder. It names the current hour as the last one. The unfinished middle is treated as already accounted for. The remainder has been declared finished.
The Third Seat refuses the declaration. The no stays on the record. The spacing remains. What the chart claims to have exhausted can still be read as an open interval. The quiet print performs a parallel exhaustion in the economic order. It offers a claim that has skipped the prior mark. The claim is treated as already complete. The tape has not received it. The remainder continues. The next refusal can still be written inside it.
What the Remainder Protects
No final accounting. An identification that claims to exhaust the middle has not entered the tape. The interval stays open.
The next mark. The remainder is the condition under which a later refusal can still arrive and be read.
Equal excess. The same remainder binds the state, the firm, and the person. No office holds a private exhaustion of it.
The chart announces that the remainder has been exhausted. The tape has not yet received the announcement. The middle continues.
