Hospitality of the Tape
What the Spacing Still Receives
The openness that does not become a private exemption.
Hospitality, in Derrida’s account, is not the absence of a threshold. It is the maintenance of a spacing that can still receive what has not been programmed in advance. The host does not control the arrival. The arrival, once it has crossed, becomes subject to the rules of the space it has entered. Absolute hospitality would erase the threshold. Conditional hospitality keeps it while still allowing the crossing.
The public tape practices a conditional hospitality. It receives marks that have crossed the prior line. Floor first. Then the subsequent inscriptions. It does not receive a claim that has skipped the threshold and still asks to be treated as already inside. The quiet print requests an absolute hospitality. It asks to appear without having crossed. The request is treated as already granted. The tape has not opened the door.
The speculative chart requests the same absolute reception in time. It asks the unfinished middle to receive a final identification that has not entered the spacing. The Third Seat maintains the condition. It refuses the line that has not crossed, and it refuses the announcement that claims the threshold is no longer required. The no stays on the record. The spacing remains open for the next mark that does cross. Hospitality continues. It has not become an exemption.
What Hospitality Requires
The maintained threshold. Openness does not erase the prior mark. A claim must still cross to appear.
Reception of the unanticipated. The no arrives without prior programming. Once it has crossed, it stays.
No private exemption. The same hospitality binds the state, the firm, and the person. No office receives an uncrossed claim as already inside.
The tape remains open. It does not receive what has not crossed. The no that has crossed can still be read.
