Discourse · a story
The good years.
They still call that the good years. That is the tell.
You hit up your phone. What do I eat. Do I stay. Is this bill money. It said yeah, all soft. Felt like somebody had your back. Nobody put the price on paper. Your boy came through at eight. You got hit for twenty-four. They called that looking out.
Playing dumb was a look. Miss groceries for a week, they said it is a transition. Nothing left, they said that is private. You ask for the five lines, they rub your shoulder and tell you a story. Story cashed. That was the whole game.
Back room kept a tight number while the floor was dead. Called the dead floor a panic. Boss and the new kid did not pay the same. Book did not match the room, so they changed the book. Little machine even picked who ate. Read everything. Never read the rules.
Kids come around later like, where the receipt. Ain't no receipt. Just a nice memory, and a button that said it landed. It did not. Floor was a feeling. Printer was on the weekend shift. A promise got spent like cash till it folded.
Third seat looked annoying next to all that nice. Then everybody sat down, and the joke got there late. Wasn't that people couldn't count. Counting was optional. A story was cash.
