A smiling soul, not a selfie.
Jonny Thomson, Big Think, “Love, sex, and happiness, explained by philosophy.” Full interview, 4 April 2025. The film is copyrighted. This page does not copy it. The link is the resource.
What it argues
Aristotle’s ladder ends at happiness, not at the next purchase. Thomson says the word got stuck on a beaming face. A smiling soul is closer. Pleasure is a desire met, and the desires do not stop. Flourishing is looked at backward, after a hard stretch. A second light he names is moderation. Money, later, is a tool. A world without it shows why the tool matters. The film does not mint, and it does not appoint an office.
If the third seat is sat
The good years were a phone that said yeah, a friend rate called looking out, and a story that cashed. That is pleasure standing in for a line. A sat third seat does not hand out a smile. It hands the person the receipt.
Survival is paid first, from surplus already titled. The week is not a mood, and it is not a print. What remains is named, even when it is zero. Desire can still want the steak and the night out. It cannot call the miss a transition, or spend a story as cash. Moderation is the posted fee. Boss and new kid pay the same one. The gadget may pay the floor on the clock. It may not pick who deserves dinner.
Self-sovereignty here is small. You can read the book. You can refuse a skipped line. You follow the same order. The happier part is not a louder pleasure. It is the path you can see. A wrong path is still open. It is no longer the only one that spends.
