Writing That Still Arrives
What Can Still Be Placed on the Tape
The mark the chart claims has already been retired.
A writing that still arrives is not a private act. It is the possibility that a later mark can still enter the spacing and be read. Derrida’s account of the signature and of iterability stresses that a writing which could only be performed once, by one person, in one room, would not be a writing the tape could recognize. It would be a recollection that dies with its holder.
The public tape keeps this possibility open. Floor first. A miss stays a zero. An unpublished change is not a change. These marks do not retire the writing. The Third Seat’s prior refusals stay on the record. They do not declare that no further mark is needed. Later readers can still open the tape. The next no, when it is written, can still be placed inside the sequence. The writing continues to arrive.
The speculative chart attempts to retire the writing. It names the current hour as the last one. No further mark is required. The quiet print performs a parallel retirement in the economic order. It offers a claim that has skipped the prior mark and asks to be treated as already complete. The public book refuses both. A chart that claims the writing is finished has not entered the tape. The possibility continues. The next mark can still arrive.
What the Writing Requires
Continued arrival. The possibility of further marks has not been exhausted.
No final retirement. An identification that claims the writing is finished has not entered the tape.
Equal writing. The same possibility binds the state, the firm, and the person. No office holds a private retirement of it.
The chart announces that the writing has been retired. The tape has not yet received the announcement. The next mark can still arrive.
