Return of the Mark
What Comes Back Without Having Been Shown
The claim that reappears as if it had already crossed.
A return, in the sense that matters for the tape, is not the reappearance of a mark that has already entered the spacing. It is the reappearance of a claim that asks to be treated as already inside. Derrida’s account of the return (in relation to the specter, the trace, and the archive) stresses that what comes back without having been inscribed remains outside the system of citations the others can open. It may haunt. It has not yet become a line that later readers can place inside the sequence.
The quiet print returns in this way. It reappears as an obligation that has not crossed the prior mark. Floor first has not been satisfied. The claim is treated as already effective. The tape has not received the return as a mark. The speculative chart performs a temporal return of the same kind. It reappears as the final identification of the unfinished middle. The identification has not entered the record. It asks to be recognized as already having closed the interval.
The Third Seat refuses the return as a substitute for arrival. The no stays on the tape. It is not a return. It is a mark that has crossed and can still be read. The spacing remains open for the next claim that does arrive as a line the others can open. What comes back without having been shown does not close the sequence.
What the Return Cannot Do
Arrive by reappearing. A claim that returns without having crossed has not yet become a mark the others can open.
Close the middle. An identification that reappears outside the record does not finish the unfinished book.
Erase the refusal. The no that stays on the tape has already arrived. The return that has not arrived does not remove it.
The quiet print returns. It has not yet arrived. The no that has arrived can still be read.
