Third Seat
The Tree
Observation from The Strange Reason Life Can Not Survive Without Sunlight.
A tree does not grow by quietly drawing its mass from the soil beneath it. Van Helmont’s five-year willow experiment showed the numbers: the plant gained roughly 164 pounds while the dried earth lost only about two ounces. Nearly all of that solid wood came from thin air and water, assembled by light.
The order is fixed and open. Light arrives first—the energy that drives the reaction. Gas (carbon dioxide) is taken from the air and fixed into structure. Water is drawn up and split, supplying hydrogen while releasing oxygen. Soil contributes only a thin measure of minerals. Nothing is hidden. The mass that appears is accounted for in sequence; the process cannot quietly invent weight from an unrecorded source.
The human economy, left to the first two seats alone, has often worked the other way. New claims can be printed or cleared at par without a prior public line. Surplus can be named after the fact. Losses can be shifted off the page until they land on someone else. The result is growth that looks solid but rests on unshown extraction.
The Third Seat changes the resemblance. It does not replace the state or the firm. It sits beside them and requires the same published order for all three: floor first from already-named surplus, mint only on a visible schedule, named credit that does not clear at par, and a tape on which title, mint, lien, conversion, and agent acts must appear. Refusal of a skipped line is itself a public record.
With that seat in place, economic growth begins to track the tree more closely. Expansion is limited to what has already been shown and sequenced. The “mass” of new claims cannot be quietly taken from an unpublished source. Feedback is immediate and visible rather than delayed and socialized. The system remains opt-in and parallel to existing rails, yet the quiet drain becomes harder to maintain.
A living tree stays strong because its inputs arrive in order and remain accountable. An economy that keeps the same public book grows on the same principle: what cannot be shown is not growth. The Third Seat is the leaf that makes the sequence visible.
Addendum
Mystical synchronicity
Light, gas, water, and soil arrive in order. The tape remains open. The three seats sit beside the book.
