A smiling soul, not a beaming app.
Jonny Thomson, Big Think, “Love, sex, and happiness, explained by philosophy.” Full interview, 4 April 2025. The film is copyrighted. This page does not transcribe it and does not hold the file.
What it argues
Happiness, in this telling, is not a streak of pleasure. It is flourishing: a soul that can smile when the week is hard. Three pillars. Do not mistake pleasure for the good. Keep the middle, not the binge and not the fast. A life that is not decent is not a happy one, however loud the party. Love, on the same account, is seeing the person, not only the surface. Sex can belong to that. It is not the whole of it. Money matters because a society has made it the score. Philosophy is the habit of asking whether the score is the life.
If the third seat is ordinary
She still asks what to eat. The phone can say the road. It cannot say the life. The floor is posted before the week is bargained. Shelter, food, care, a line, a small income. Paid from surplus already named. Not printed to cover the mood. She can read the five lines. If one is missing, she says no. The no is hers. That is the sovereignty. Not a new coin. Not a new government.
The remainder is named, even when it is zero. She does not skip the floor to invent a glow. A friend does not pay less. The gadget does not pick who eats. Pleasure is allowed on top of the floor. It is not the floor. The middle holds: no quiet club, no weekend print, no story that spends like cash. Love is easier when the bill is not a secret. You can see the person because the book is not wearing their face.
Happier, here, is not a brighter screen. It is a week you can stand in. The living cost came first. The leftover is yours, or it is honestly nothing. Nobody rewrote the line while you slept. The soul has less to flinch from. That is the smile.
