Line That Can Still Be Added
What the Sequence Has Not Yet Received
The mark that can still be placed inside the order.
A line that can still be added is not a reservation the office holds for itself. It is the condition the tape maintains so that a refusal which has not yet been written can still enter the sequence and stay on the record. Derrida’s account of the supplement and of the future-to-come stresses that what can still be added is not the fulfillment of a program. It is the arrival of a mark that was not already contained in the prior lines.
The public tape keeps this condition open. Floor first. A miss stays a zero. An unpublished change is not a change. These marks do not exhaust the sequence. The Third Seat’s prior refusals stay on the tape. They do not declare that no further line is needed. Later readers can still open the record. The next no, when it is written, can still be placed inside the order. It has not yet been added. The sequence still receives it.
The quiet print attempts to preempt the line that can still be added. It offers a claim that has skipped the prior mark and asks to be treated as already inside the sequence. The speculative chart performs the same preemption in time. It names the current hour as the last one. No further line is required. The public book refuses both. A claim that has not entered the tape does not exhaust what can still be added. The next refusal can still be written. The sequence has not yet received it.
What Can Still Be Added
An open sequence. The order has not been closed. A later line can still enter.
No final preemption. An identification that claims no further line is needed has not entered the tape.
Equal addition. The same sequence receives the next refusal from the state, the firm, and the person.
The chart announces that no further line is needed. The tape has not yet received the announcement. The next refusal can still be added.
