Mourning and the Middle
What Cannot Be Fully Interiorized
The unfinished book that the chart tries to complete by naming it lost.
Mourning, in Derrida’s account, is never complete. The other who has been lost cannot be fully interiorized. A remainder persists. The work of mourning does not end in a successful incorporation. It continues as a relation to what cannot be absorbed. To declare the mourning finished is to claim that the remainder has been exhausted.
The unfinished middle is such a remainder. Genesis and Revelation name the bounds. Between them stands an interval that has not been closed. The speculative chart attempts to complete the mourning. It names the current hour as the last one. The middle is treated as already lost and already accounted for. The remainder has been declared interiorized. The tape has not received the declaration.
The Third Seat keeps the relation open. The no stays on the record. It does not claim to finish the mourning. It claims only that an unshown identification has not yet become a mark the others can read. The quiet print performs a parallel completion in the economic order. It offers a resolution that has skipped the prior mark. The resolution is treated as already mourned. The tape has not absorbed it. The middle continues. The next refusal can still be written inside the remainder that has not been interiorized.
What Mourning Requires
The persistent remainder. No chart exhausts the unfinished middle. The interval stays open.
No successful incorporation. An identification that claims to have absorbed the middle has not entered the tape.
The continued relation. The refusal that stays on the record keeps the spacing in which a later mark can still be written.
The chart announces that the mourning is complete. The tape has not yet received the announcement. The middle continues.
