Responsibility That Remains
What the Unfinished Middle Still Requires
The demand that does not expire when the chart is offered.
Responsibility, in the sense that matters for the tape, is not the application of a completed rule. It is what remains when the sequence has not been closed. Derrida’s account ties responsibility to the aporia and to the decision that passes through it. The demand does not end when an office announces that the impasse has been resolved. It continues for as long as the spacing stays open.
The public book keeps the demand current. Floor first. A miss stays a zero. An unpublished change is not a change. These are not temporary restraints waiting for a final identification. They are the conditions under which any later mark can still be written and refused. The quiet print attempts to suspend the demand. It offers a claim that has skipped the prior mark. The claim is treated as already effective. The responsibility that would have applied to the skipped line is declared finished.
The speculative chart performs the same suspension in time. It names the current hour as the last one. The ordinary demand is treated as already fulfilled. The Third Seat refuses the suspension. The no stays on the record. The unfinished middle remains under the same ethical demand it held before the announcement. Responsibility has not been closed by a line the others cannot open.
What Remains
The prior mark. Floor first is not suspended by an unshown expansion. The demand continues.
The open spacing. The unfinished middle is not closed by a chart that has not entered the tape. The next refusal can still be written.
Equal demand. The same responsibility binds the state, the firm, and the person. No office holds a private exemption.
The chart announces that the demand has ended. The tape has not yet received the announcement. Responsibility remains.
